Rest In Peace Skip

One of the horses in the barn came in with a lame (sore) foot a few days ago. Upon equine vet inspection and x-rays, we found out he has a fractured cannon bone, which is found in the leg.

When a horse breaks or fractures a leg, there's very little chance he'll survive. If they do surgery, the horse still needs to get through recovery, standing on three legs, which their anatomy doesn't support. The best situation is to just euthanize the horse.

We think my vet's horse, Skippy, was kicked by another horse in the field, and fractured his leg. She made the decision to euthanize him tomorrow, my 21st birthday. Skip's been my buddy since we bought the boarding stable ten years ago. He was always a sweetheart when I brushed him, and even though he was mildly bipolar under saddle, I had one or two good rides on him. We spent some time brushing him tonight and feeding him carrots. It's clear he's in a lot of pain, and we gave him pain medicine to get through the night.

We'll miss you, Skippington.
