Are We Home Yet? (South Dakota)

We left for home Sunday morning, making it through Wyoming and into South Dakota.

We spent the day being tourists again, visiting Devil's Tower in Wyoming, and Sturgis, Mount Rushmore, and Crazy Horse in South Dakota.

Devil's Tower was interesting because it's a natural rock formation, with nothing else like it around. It also has a pretty cool Native American background story, including the Seven Sisters star constellation.

We then drove to Sturgis, South Dakota. The boys took a walk through the Motorcycle Museum and enjoyed that, but otherwise the town was pretty deserted. I guess everyone was just hibernating until the giant rally.

After that we ran up the mountains to visit Mt. Rushmore. That was pretty cool, cuz you always see it in shows and history class. I feel bad for Teddy Roosevelt though, he's tucked away behind Washington and Jefferson, and the monument was his idea.

My favorite part of the tourist attractions was after Mt. Rushmore though. We hopped a few hills over to Crazy Horse. I had no idea what it was but it had "horse" in the name so it had to be interesting. Turns out it is the world's largets mountain carving, in honor of the Native American culture. It's not completed yet, or even near completion, but it's pretty awesome. They have a museum there now, showing the culture, progress, and history. You can check out the Crazy Horse website for more info on this amazing monument.

This is the mountain currently.

This shows the 1/34th scaled sculpture of the finished product. You can see the mountain in the background.
