Cutest Firefly Ever

Every summer our 4-H has a horse camp. I attended for six or seven years, first as a camper, then a counselor, and returning after graduating 4-H to help out. One of my absolute favorite memories is from a couple years ago, on the first night of camp.

Now, to officially have summer fireflies are needed. At 4-H Horse Camp, this is no exception. On the first night of camp, the girls are all wound up and excited and nobody gets much sleep. Lights out are at eleven, but there's always an hour of whispering, giggling, flashlights, and the counselors and leaders yelling at them to go to sleep.
"Morning comes early girls!"
"Girls! That's enough!"
Or my favorite from the unexperienced counselors-- "GO TO SLEEP!!"

Normally I just put headphones in and a sleep timer on my ipod and cruse through the rough first night. But this year was different. All the nearly 80 girls had finally calmed down, with a few stragglers and the room was just about asleep when it came.

One lonely firefly softly lighting up his little beacon. Boop.......boop.......boop. It was like an explosion went off in the girls' sleeping building. Girls screaming "FIREFLY!" all over the place. Laughing, shouting, flashlights...you'd have thought a bomb went off. It was hysterical, I couldn't stop laughing at the kids. Of course the leaders didn't find it as humorous and had to calm everybody down again, but it was by far one of the best first nights I've ever had there.

It's not summer without fireflies or horse camp.
