For my Travel Writing class, we met at a local farm where they sell all kinds of homegrown produce and products. In the fall, there's a ton of activities geared mainly for kids, a box of corn kernels to play in like sand, a pick your own pumpkin patch, and a little corn maze. But the best part was the big corn maze.
The maze itself was kind of cool, but the best part was the scavenger hunt. (I know how childish that sounded.) They hid sign posts with different vegetables or fruits on them and gave you a list when you walk in. There were twelve items, all with knight-sounding names such as "Sir Strawberry of the Fields" or "Sir Pumpkin Pie."
We found some classmates halfway through and they'd found all of them but "Sir Tomato" so we decided to team up and find it. IT TOOK FOREVER. We paced the entire maze trying to find the tomato sign. I finally saw it through the corn stalks but we still had to find the path to it. After we'd found the tomato for them, the only thing left on our list was "Sir Onion" and he proved a more elusive knight than the tomato was.
We kept passing groups of strangers who were also on the hunt, and each time we passed them we'd shout out hints or just share a laugh that a bunch of adults were stuck in a maze. After an hour and a half in a field of corn, we found Sir Onion and booked it out of there.
Even though we're adults in college, a corn maze from a local farm is always a fun way to spend a Saturday in the fall. If there is a farm like this near you, go before winter comes! You can't say no caramel apples, fresh apple cider, or a pumpkin patch.
