Occasionally we find a vegetable growing around the house, that should really be on the farm in a field.
Last year, it was a cornstalk. This year, it's a pumpkin plant.
Last summer we were surprised to see a single cornstalk sprouting at the end of the back porch. We didn't get any corn cobs from it, since someone picked it off too early. It grew for a while until Misty wrapped her leash around it and broke it. We're not sure how the plant got there, other than maybe from my old gerbil food which had pieces of dried corn in it, that got tossed over the railing.
This summer, we've got a big happy pumpkin plant sprouting at the corner of our front porch. After Halloween, one of the Jack-O-Lanterns fell off under the bush and decomposed. I guess someone didn't carve it very well, because a seed started growing and now we have big pumpkin leaves. At least we won't have to buy as many pumpkins this October.
